Audience feedback

Today I have been introducing people to my trailer who have never seen it, or the making of it before. I got some excellent feedback which I am very happy with which shows that I have presented my own ideas through my project clearly for the audience to understand. I asked my audience to respond to three question after watching the trailer.

1. Do you understand the storyline?
2. What do you think about horror as a genre? Has anyone else influenced your opinion? (Two Step Flow)
3. Are you feared by the scenes in this trailer?

Both participants responded YES to the first question and said that they has a clear understanding of what was happening all the way through the trailer. I was very happy with their answers to the second question as they had the same thoughts and opinions as I have about the horror genre. They both preferred to have to think about what is going on instead of it just being presented to them. They said they were not influenced by anyone else's opinion about the genre, but went on to say that they don't watch a film/trailer for everything to be presented to them 'on a plate' and they prefer to think about the situation and come up with their own thoughts, ideas and opinions. This can apply to the 'Reception Theory' which is presented by  Stuart Hall. This shows that my audience wanted to negotiate when decoding my trailer and maybe make their own scenario in their head on what is happening that I have not shown. Finally, my third question asked if they feared what they saw in my trailer. Their responses where something that I has not thought about in the process of making my film trailer. As they watched the footage, they thought of the child and what was happening with him. They also said that in the back of their minds they were constantly thinking of the child's welfare and how the parents would be feeling. This relates to moral panic and the secret fears the audience have when they are watching the horror genre.

Research- Ancillary Tasks

All these film posters are taken from psychological horror films based on the same memes and tropes I am going to include in my trailer. All the posters use dark images but with great picture quality. This is something I have captured when editing my photos to use as my advertisement. I think that the font is the most important ideology to make sure it is 100% accurate and conveys the message of the genre to the target audience.

In most psychological horror films you often do not see the 'haunting' object until the end of the film. This is why it is often 'horror rules' to only include a shadow or sense of fear from darkness when advertising the film. This is an obvious meme as if the idea of the film has been shown in the trailer, it will put people off going to watch the film. This is why film trailers should also have an open narrative so it encourages audiences to watch a film to find out what happens next or how the story is resolved.

It is also very important that the right colour scheme is used when picking the colour of the photo and the font. If this is not picked accurately, it could take the horror and fear away from the poster in seconds.

Most of the horror film posters that have been published all have very dark colour schemes including this one below 'The Conjuring'. In my opinion , this film is one of the best horror films I have ever seen and the film trailer and poster is what intrigued me to go and see the film. It is important to understand that without these advertisements, it can make a huge difference to the mass of target audience which is actually targeted and drawn in to watching the film.

Intertextuality and Ideology

Media texts often reference other texts such as...
A pastiche takes elements and incorporates them into a new work
A parody mocks or pokes fun at another work. An example of this in the horror genre would be paranormal activity. This film is used to mock other horror's but has actually turned out to be the start of hand held footage films that have become very successful in the market.

The ideology of a psychological horror trailer is very important to draw the audience in. Certain fonts and colour schemes have to be used to show the audience what genre in is trying to portray. These colours are often dark and eerie with exaggerated fonts and titles. A lot of the mise-en-scene is littered with images of death and religion which first started with a happy family.

The Hypodermic Needle Theory

This theory suggests that the media injects attitudes and beliefs into its audiences mind through media texts. This theory is also known as the magic bullet theory and the audience are often seen as powerless with no interaction in to the media text. This means that the audience can not prevent their own influence and often become overwhelmed and enticed into the media text without any power over it. This theory relates to my film trailer as it may put thoughts through my audiences mind about child abduction. This could be in a good way by making people think more when taking their children out to parks and watching who is about. However this could be bad as it may put idea's into members of the audiences minds that could result in the media being banned, for example 'Clockwork orange' (1971).

Uses and Gratifications Theory

This theory suggests more about what the audience does with the media rather than what the media does to them. This theory argues that the audience take a firm role over the production of media and how successful it is. An example of this would be social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter as the audience that uses them determines how successful they are and controls what happens on them. The media say that this theory helps an audience with diversion, escapism, information, pleasure, social identity and sometimes sexual stimulation. For example, watching a horror film with violence in can relieve aggression from the viewer watching it so they are less likely to want to preform violent acts in real life. This model can also relate to 'Moral Panic'. This is when the audience reveal their secret fears when watching horror films or violent scenes and constantly wonder and panic in the back of their minds about what is going on. This relates directly to my trailer as it really makes the viewers think about what is going on behind the scenes of the storyline in the trailer and makes them want to view the film.

Memes and Tropes

A meme is an element of a culture or system of behaviour passed from one individual to another by imitation. A trope is then the image, video or piece of text being copied and spread, usually via use of the internet. This gives the audience power over their media consumption and lets them assume an active role in interpreting and integrating media in to their own lives.

I will use memes and tropes in my film trailer to show the conventions of a typical horror film presented in recent years. Most of these involve hand held camera's as the footage seems more real and raw to the viewer. This comes across as more sinister and frightening as it makes the audience feel like this could actually happen to them, setting in moral panic. I believe this is the audience a pleasure that is most successful in the film industry nowadays as it presents how the audience like to feel the anticipation within something that can happen in their own home. This shows how post modern our world is and the fact that something terrifying  that could happen to a 'normal' person is so satisfying and thrilling.

  • Target Audience

The target audience for my psychological film trailer will be an age range from 15-24 of both genders. I think this is the ideal age range as according to my research, this is the age range that attend the cinema most to see horror films closely relating to my horror trailer. I assume that my target audience will most probably still be students who look for escapism in their social life by retreating to the cinema to watch a film. I also think, like me, they will be interested in horror films and enjoy the adrenaline rush you get from the typical conventions of a horror film. My best example would be the Paranormal Activity films and how the audience knows that something bad is going to happen every time it turns to night and appears on screen as ' NIGHT #3 AUGUST 3RD 2012'. This brings anticipation to the audience and ensures that they are in for a fright which builds the bodies adrenaline as they know that something is coming.

I believe that I am appealing to a mass audience of teenagers to young adults who are working to middle class, mostly with part time jobs in full time education or in full time jobs. I am picking this socio-economic group as I believe all the people in this mass audience can afford to attend the cinema to see new releases and are part of a community that I am also apart of with the same interests and lifestyle that is flowing in the 21st century.  I believe that there is a huge gap I the market at the moment for a story line like mine. Following all the Northampton clown articles that I have talked about earlier on in my blog, I believe that this story line would make a great and interesting film if a few twists like I have created are included. I don't believe that their have been any other story lines like my own since the film 'IT' was released.

    Technology

Through out my whole project I will be using Blogger to post my research and planning. This will help me keep track of all the information I have gathered to help me with my project. Now I have used this site for two years, I am familiar with the many ways I can present my findings through different technologies including 'slideshare' and 'prezzie'. I will present my evaluation through these different technologies to show my range of understanding.

Youtube will have a vital role in my research and planning stage. It will help me to analyse previous film trailers and the conventions which are important to include in my own.

At school I have use of a Apple Mac. This will be my main use of technology when editing my film trailer. I will use either 'imovie' or 'final cut pro' to edit my trailer together which is situated on the Mac.

I will also be using a fully HD camcorder to film my footage. I believe this will give my film trailer the best quality footage with the gloss effect of a high value production trailer. I will also be using a tripod to use with the camera to steady the image. This will ensure that the camera quality was perfect with no shaking or pixelated images.
